moto3 / Leopard Racing ready to fight back
Quartararo will start from the fourth row as Mir improves his posture during Qualifying, Locatelli looks for more.
Official Qualifying tightened the field again in Montmelo, the scene for round seven of the 2016 season. On the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya the three riders of the Leopard Racing team highlighted their ability, giving their maximum to decide the grid for the Moto3 class.
The best of the ‘triple force’ run under the guidance of Christian Lundberg and Miodrag Kotur was Fabio Quartararo. The 17 year old from Nice used the session to develop his chassis and refine the electronics. This allowed him to take accelerate harder out of the corners on the revised circuit. His improvements helped him take 12th on the grid.
Only 23rd during the morning session, Joan Mir could only improve as the day went on. Small changes to the chassis and gearbox allowed the rookie to move up to 18th place.
Andrea Locatelli was tenth overall in FP3 in the morning session but was unable to repeat his speed and will start in 23rd position. Another race of comebacks for the Italian.
Riders will take to the track at 08:40 local time (GMT +2) on Sunday for 20 minutes of Warm Up. Then at 11:00 the lights go out for the seventh round of the 2016 World Championship.
#20 Fabio Quartararo – 12th (1’54.737):
“It’s been a complicated day, but positive. The morning, with the lower temperatures, for us was increasingly difficult to find the ideal setup, but we made it in the afternoon. However we are still far, I’m sure tomorrow will be a contest to stay in the front group and fight for the podium.”
#36 Joan MIR – 17th (1’54.957):
“Today was a difficult qualifying for us all. We found the set-up only in the last run: it was a shame because I could have imrpoved a lot, but at least I made the time alone. A positive aspect is we know we can keep a good pace. Tomorrow will be another thing: we just have to attack.”
#55 Andrea Locatelli – 23rd (1’55.225):
“It was a difficult qualifying. I was on the track alone, I tried to push but I had little confidence in the rear and I could not open the throttle as did this morning, struggling more. We start behind, but the race pace is not bad. I can stay with the other riders, so I’ll stick with them and recover as many positions as possible.”
