moto2 / Bad weather effects Moto2 Qualifying in Australia

A difficult Saturday for Danny Kent and Alessandro Nocco who tomorrow will start the Australian Grand Prix respectively in 22nd and 29th.

With FP2 for the Moto2 class cancelled yesterday due to bad weather, the two riders of Leopard Racing team, Danny Kent and Alessandro Nocco, were forced to rapidly get up to speed at the Phillip Island Circuit on Saturday, an extended FP3 helping them make up for lost time.

For the British rider, good conditions yesterday morning (second fastest in FP1) have unfortunately departed today, Kent ending 25th overall in practice. In qualifying this afternoon the 22 year old from Chippenham managed to lower his lap time to a 1’35.789, this final time earning him a spot on the eighth row on the grid.

Confidence grows for Alessandro Nocco, called by the Leopard Racing team to replace the injured Miguel Oliveira for the two rounds of Australia and Malaysia. Unfortunately the Italian, who has run for the first time on this track suffered a fall at Turn 4, closing qualifying in 29th position. His adaption to the circuit has been seriously hindered by the extreme weather and will approach the race as another chance to learn the Kalex.

Tomorrow at 11:10 Local Time (GMT +11) the riders will be back on track for 20 minutes of warm-up before the lights go out at 14:20 for the sixteenth race of the 2016 Moto2 World Championship.

#52 Danny KENT – 22nd (1’35.789):
“It was a very difficult qualifying for us. Again, down in P22 is not where we want to be. I had no confidence at all, I wasn’t enjoying riding at all. In a lot of the fast corners I felt like I was fighting against the bike. I was on the very edge of closing the front. Again I’m disappointed with the result but tomorrow is a different day so we need to keep our head up and give it our best go.”

#20 Alessandro NOCCO – 29th (1’39.340):
“This morning I had a good feeling with the rain tyres and we did not go too bad. But in the afternoon, in the dry, everything has changed. It almost seemed like another track! Lap after lap I had to try to set new directions and, when I was beginning to improve my pace, I closed the front and I could not start again, ending my Qualifying.”
