moto3 / Encouraging start for the Leopard Racing team at the ‘Cathedral’ of Assen

Joan Mir and Livio Loi had a steady showing in the first two free practice sessions of the 2017 Assen TT. The leader of the Moto3 class ended the day in third overall, while his Belgian teammate showed a good feeling with his NSF250RW.

Two weeks after the win in Catalunya, the Leopard Racing team today put their wheels back on track for the first day of the Dutch GP, the eighth round of the World Championship.

On the historic track of the Cathedral, the young Moto3 riders started FP1 in cool temperatures (19°C air / 23°C asphalt) after rain fall on the previous evening. For most of the session there were interesting times with minimal changes. Joan Mir and Livio Loi closed the session in 8th and 26th position respectively, with the Belgian author to the third highest speed of the morning.

In the afternoon FP2 started with a slight delay (h 13:25, local time) due to a red flag during the MotoGP session in the morning. None of this upset the riders too much, the entire Leopard Racing team hit the track with great determination. World Championship Leader Joan Mir was running in the top positions from the start, closing the day with the third fastest time toverall. His team-mate Livio Loi, here at his ‘home’ circuit of Assen, did not betray the expectations of the fans here, reducing the gap between his rivals and showing a revised feeling with his Honda NSF 250 RW.

Tomorrow, Saturday 24th June, the protagonists of the Moto3 class will be engaged in the third and last round of free practice, anticipating the show of official qualifying.

#36 Joan MIR – 3rd (1’42.919):

“It was a positive day, we improved many things, both with myself and the bike. In the first session we started against it a little, then the feeling improved lap after lap. I found myself running well with race rubber, but we have some work to do. Tomorrow we will try something different because I still miss a bit of grip on the rear. We’ll give it our all to do well again.”

#11 Livio LOI – 15th (1’43.615):

“We spent the day trying out different things and looking for new solutions. We finally found the direction to take. It was a useful and profitable day, in essence we learned a lot from the bike. Although in the end the time was not ideal, I’m happy for the feeling. We can still improve tomorrow, I want to thank the whole team for today’s job.”
