moto3 / First row in extremis for Mir at the British Grand Prix
Palma de Mallorca’s talent conquered the first row at the final instant in the official qualifying session at Silverstone. Teammate Livio Loi will start in 13th.
Saturday started as a challenging wet day at the 5.9 Km of the Silverstone circuit, which this weekend acts as the fascinating backdrop of the British Grand Prix, the twelfth round of the 2017 World Championship. Both Joan Mir and Livio Loi went to work out on track, despite the dirty conditions.
Contrary to yesterday, Saturday treated riders to some typical English weather and temperatures (16°C Air / 18°C Ground) were considerably lower and the humidity at 88% in the morning. Despite the unplanned atmospheric conditions in FP3, the Leopard Racing riders did not relent: Livio Loi consistently hammered the laps while keeping towards the top of the standings. His team-mate Joan Mir, quiet in the early moments of the session, came out in the closing stages to finish in fourth.
At 12:35 pm the pit-lane came back to life as official Qualifying began. Mir and Loi threw themselves in the melee of the big group of Moto3 players, provisionally standing in the top five. The traffic on the track hindered the rise of the Belgian 20-year-old who, in his run, failed to find the breakthrough. Joan Mir waited until the last moment to return to the box: a incredible final lap saw Mir challenging for pole position until the final seconds, his chances blown by his rival Romano Fenati.
For the fourth time this season, the Majorcan will launch from the first row of the starting grid; Livio Loi will be called to make another arduous comeback from the 13th on the grid at the British Grand Prix. The protagonists of the Moto3 class will return tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock for 20 minutes of Warm Up, anticipating the 2017 season’s twelfth race, which will kick off at 12:40 local time (GMT + 1).
#36 Joan MIR – 2nd (2’12.962):
“I’m really happy about how the day went, we worked hard during the FP3, but during Qualifying we knew we had to push at the last moment. I’m happy with the time, a second position in great for today, but tomorrow we will have to handle the race in the best possible way.”
#11 Livio LOI – 13th (2’13.919):
“In the wet we stepped forward with respect to previous races. In qualifying we went well, unfortunately in the final moments a large group disturbed me in my lap. But I have a good pace and I feel ready to do a good race tomorrow.”
