moto3 / Good rhythm for Mir and Loi on Friday at Montmelo

The two teammates of the Leopard Racing team both produced brilliant performances in the first two free practice sessions of the Gran Premi de Catalunya 2017.

After Thursday’s interviews and presentations, the first two free practice sessions began today at the Grand Prix de Catalunya, the seventh round of the 2017 season. Friday morning began with damp asphalt and low temperatures due to the rain fall in the early hours of the day.

The young Moto3 riders started FP1 walking on eggshells and only in the last moments of the session did the times drop. Just four laps for World Championship leader Joan Mir to set himself amongst the best, ending second a place behind rival Fenati. His team-mate Livio Loi set a solid time of 2’09.468 at the end of his 13 lap run.

In the afternoon, with much improved conditions (28°C air / 45°C asphalt), the times dropped rapidly. In particular, Livio Loi made good progress through the session and few minutes from the end was third provisionally. Only a small mistake at the end saw the Belgian drop back in the rankings, but the pace put on display leaves hope for tomorrow. A late charge for Joan Mir allowed him to grab the provisional front row with the third fastest lap of the day.

Tomorrow, Saturday 10th June, the protagonists of the Moto3 class will be engaged in the third and last round of free practice, anticipating the official qualifying show just after lunch.

#36 Joan MIR – 3rd (1’54.608):
“I’m happy for today. We worked well, trying some things and discarding other options. The bike goes strong and I have a good pace. My lap was not perfect, I think we could have pushed a little bit harder, but in general I’m happy with the feeling with the bike.”

#11 Livio LOI – 13th (1’55.321):
“It was a positive day! The first session was a little abnormal in the wet, but I went around the track to evaluate the feeling with the bike and put a few km under my belt. In the second session we worked really well: I went for a long time alone, I kept a good pace, hampered by only a small mistake on the last lap that did not allow me to improve my lap. In general my feelings are more than positive.”
