moto3 / Joan Mir on the front row at Ricardo Tormo

With a last-minute lap, the 2017 World Champion ranks second in the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana. His partner in the Leopard Racing Team, Belgian Livio Loi, will open the ninth row.

Valencian sun kissed the 4 km of Ricardo Tormo circuit for the second consecutive day, the 18th and final round of the 2017 season. The much milder temperatures (17°C / ground 14°C) than yesterday favored the protagonists of the Moto3 class on Saturday. World champion Joan Mir improved by about 0.5s on the combined time by closing FP3 in 6th place while his teammate in the Leopard Racing Team, Livio Loi, encountered some difficulties related to yesterday’s fall.

For Qualifying at 12:35 the temperatures rose again, as did the interest of all the fans who came to Cheste to applaud their favourites. Many are paying tribute to the Spanish talent of Leopard Racing Team, Joan Mir, who is presented here as the 2017 World Champion for the first time in Europe. The Majorcan did not betray their expectations, always gravitating in the Top Five and throwing in a time-attack at the last opportunity. Despite the traffic of the riders who preceded him, MiracleMir closed the session with a 1’38.873, a time that projected him to second place behind the poleman and his fellow countryman Jorge Martin. Belgian Livio Loi could not find the correct set-up and will be called for an uphill battle tomorrow, starting from the ninth row.

The protagonists of the Moto3 class will return tomorrow morning at 8:40 am for 20 minutes of Warm Up, anticipating the 2017 season’s last race, which will kick off at 11:00 local time.

#36 Joan MIR – 2nd (1’38.873)
“I am very happy with today, we have made a great step forward with our rhythm. A pity only in the lap time-attack: to get shared of the other riders I had in front I went a bit wide, but despite everything I did a great lap, I did not expect it! I’m confident for tomorrow.”

#11 Livio LOI – 27th (1’40.775)
“It was another difficult day: the fall in the FP1 yesterday made itself felt, with a sharp pain on the finger of the left hand. We have not yet found the right setup for the bike. We have to work for tomorrow: the crunch and grid position does not reflect my potential at all.”
