moto3 / Joan Mir returns to the ‘scene of his first crime’

Only four days after his sixth win of the season, the Moto3 championship leader comes to the Austrian circuit of the Spielberg, where 12 months ago his career took a decisive turn, monopolizing the event and delivering the Leopard Racing Team an extraordinary victory.

The Moto3 World Championship knows no rest: just after leaving the Czech Republic, the paddock is already moving on to the Red Bull Ring, where the 2017 Grand Prix of Austria will take place. The Austrian track returned to the calendar in 2016, after 19 years of absence. The circuit is located in the vicinity of Spielberg bei Knittelfeld in Styria, with an incredible elevation change of 65 metres and covers a total length of 4.3km, featuring just three left hand bends and seven to the right.

The first Grand Prix in Austria took place in 1971 at the Salzburgring circuit, which hosted Grand Prix racing until 1994. The Red Bull Ring was originally built in 1969, first known as the Österreichring. In 1996 it was renovated with the track-layout as it is known today, hosting Grand Prix events for two years as the ‘A1-Ring’, before being re-opened as the ‘Red Bull Ring’ in 2011.

Joan Mir returns to where it all began in many ways, the same track on which,12 months ago, his career began to take on an extraordinary bend by exploiting his talent and attracting the attention of both the media and fans. The Mallorcan rider achieved the hat-trick; pole position, fastest lap and victory. One year later, Joan Mir appears to be stronger, safer and more mature in Austria: supported by what he has achieved with six victories in 10 rounds, stretching his advantage over his rivals at almost any opportunity.

After his opaque performance in the Czech Republic, his team-mate Livio Loi will be determined to seek redemption to close the season 2017. Last year the Belgian was well represented at the debut on the Austrian track, becoming the author of a comeback from 21st to 10th position. Will he be able to improve and give another year’s satisfaction to the Leopard Racing Team?
