moto2 / Kent dances in the Australian rain

Second fastest in Free Practice 1, Danny Kent got his Australian GP off to a perfect start before the rain forced Free Practice 2 to be cancelled. A fall without consequences for the new Nocco.

Bad weather characterized the first day of the Australian Grand Prix, the sixteenth round of the 2016 season. The rain and the wind have hit at the Phillip Island circuit and limited the performances of the protagonists of the intermediate Moto2 class. Despite the adverse weather conditions, the Leopard Racing team has performed well thanks to the British Danny Kent.

The 22 year old from Chippenham showed an enviable feeling in the wet with his Kalex, stopping the clock (on the 11th of his 12 total laps) at 0.169s from the leader Jonas Folger and ending in front of the World Champion Johann Zarco.

A difficult debut in the World Championship for his team-mate, Alessandro Nocco. This morning the 19 year old Italian was up on the Kalex for the first time, unfortunately encountering the worst possible conditions for learning a track unknown to him and running into a harmless crash, fortunately without suffering consequences.

Tomorrow will open with the third and final free practice session, extended to make up for the lost time of Free Practice 2. Then it will be on to Qualifying to decide the starting grid for the Moto2 class of the Australian Grand Prix in 2016.

#52 Danny KENT- 2nd (1’47.798):
“For the first day here in Phillip Island it has been a cold and wet one, that’s for sure! I’m not going to complain as I have really good feeling in the rain here. In FP1 we were able to finish the session in second and only 0.1s from the top. The forecasts for tomorrow for Qualifying and practice look the same which is a positive for me as I already have a good feeling in the rain.”

#20 Alessandro NOCCO – 29th (2’02.459):
“The first day was difficult for me, I do not know the track or the bike, plus we were in the wet and I had no reference like what I could have on dry asphalt. Unfortunately I only did a few laps because I fell when it started raining harder when I opened the gas in tight hairpin of Turn 4, the rear wheel began to spin and I crashed to the ground, but without physical consequences.”
