In Köln, the race was on right from the get go. A fast pace and lots of attacks made sure that the first kilometers of racing were not the easiest ones, but once the right group went away, the peloton took over control. Because of the work of both Katusha and Bora for the likes of respectively Marcel Kittel and Sam Bennett, the lead of the attacking group always was somewhere between one and a half and three minutes. For Leopard Pro Cycling, no rider was involved in the front group of seven, but later in the race the Luxembourgish outfit also tried its luck with some moves to make the race more hard.
Altough sometimes groups of around 20 to 30 riders went clear, and altough the bunch split, all came back together expect from some riders who lost contact to the main group. It was clear that a bunch sprint finish was inevitable and therefore Leopard was not afraid to take things into their own hands as they guided Alexander Krieger to a good position on the front of the peloton. In the end, the German who finished fifth in the recent Skoda Tour de Luxembourg, crossed the line in ninth. A result that makes the team proud, especially seeing the way the team rode between the World Tour and Pro Continental teams.
Unfortunately, Konrad Gessner was not able to reach the finish line in Köln. The German had his official comeback after breaking both wrists at Tour de Normandie earlier this year. In the end, it’s the quality race kilometers that counts for the young German and he has already shown that he is on the right way back, which is a satisfying feeling. Also Pit Schlechter gave the team a very good feeling, since the Luxembourger beat all his competitors at the local LG Betrange race, where also Gaëtan Pons took part. Schlechter did not mess about and won by almost an one minute margin to the runner-up. Pons finished as fourth.
