cycling news / Krieger finishes Skoda Tour prologue in second
Today the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg had its traditional opener with a 2,3 kilometers long prologue in the streets of Luxembourg City. Leopard Pro Cycling’s Alexander Krieger had high ambitions and finished in second.
One second seperates Krieger from prologue winner
Just after 7 o’clock, the prologue and thus the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg started as the first rider went down the starting ramp. For Leopard Pro Cycling, Belgian Jens Reynders was the first to have his go and after a solid effort, he set the – what turned out to be – 63rd time. First real hopes for a good stage result came when Luxembourger Gaëtan Pons hit the road. A brave effort with lots of power made for a very good result as he finished the prologue in fifteenth, only ten seconds behind the later winner Damien Gaudin.
The last two riders starting for Leopard Pro Cycling were Pit Leyder and Alexander Krieger. Leyder went all out right from the start and took a lot of risks in the descent. This meant that the youngster had a good speed as he hit the nasty uphill cobbled section. Unfortunately, Leyder lost his pace a bit, but crossed the finish line in a well-deserved nineteenth position. Last rider Krieger had bad luck in the prologue last year, but this time around all went well for the German. With very strong legs and a rather perfect descent, all came down to maintaining his efforts all the way to the line. Krieger gave it his all but was in the end just beaten by one second. A very good result, but Krieger himself hoped for more.
Alexander Krieger: “Of course I am happy to finish in second place, however I am also a bit disappointed as I really came here to win the prologue. I expected that I would do good in this opener of the Skoda Tour, but it is really nice to get the confirmation that I can already perform well at the hors categorie level as I recently came back from an injury. I am looking forward to the next days of racing, this second place opens a lot of opportunities .”
