moto3 / Mir and Loi find steady footing at the Sachsenring
The leader of the Moto3 class and his teammate started with their best foot forward in Germany, closing the day inside the top five of the first two free practice sessions of the Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland 2017.
Five days after Assen, the Leopard Racing team today put their wheels on track at the Sachsenring, for the Motorrad Grand Prix of Deutschland, the ninth round of 2017. Friday morning started with cool temperatures (16°C air / 15°C asphalt) after yesterday’s violent rain showers, riders starting calmly as they assessed the new asphalt.
Having tasted the new surface, the Moto3 riders began improving their times with each lap. The Leopard Racing team started off with both riders inside the top five for much of the FP1 session, finishing in 5th and 8th, respectively with leader Joan Mir (1’28.271) and the his teammate Livio Loi (1’28.459).
In the afternoon the temperatures rose slightly and the morning times were radically lowered. Joan Mir started FP2 in the right spirit, he and his teammate trading top positions early on. Loi was also author to the highest top speed of the day. 27 minutes from the end, the session was interrupted by a red flag from Race Direction for the accident of Jorge Martin, who was immediately taken to the medical centre.
As he recovered, the talent of Palma de Mallorca began to put the hammer down and for the first time dropped under the 1’28” barrier, moving to top the timing screens. The Belgian Livio Loi who, on the 20th of his 22 laps, made an interesting 1’27.933 to move him up to fourth in the session, ending the day in fifth overall on the combined times.
Tomorrow, Saturday 1st July, the protagonists of the Moto3 class will be engaged in the third and last round of free practice, anticipating the official qualifying show.
#36 Joan MIR – 1st (1’27.179):
“On this first day we found some interesting solutions. I feel comfortable on the bike; I did a good lap but above all we have good pace, which is the most important thing. There is still all weekend ahead, we must continue in this direction. The unknown will be the tyres…”
#11 Livio LOI – 5th (1’27.933):
“It was a positive day, from start to finish. We have taken a good step and tried many things for the first day. There were really two beautiful sessions, concluded in the top 5 places: the position we are competing for and we want to keep.”
