moto3 / Mir and Loi make the most of difficult Qualifying session
Joan Mir will launch from eighth place tomorrow at the Gran Prix de France 2017. A solid effort in Qualifying for team-mate Livio Loi who will open the fifth row of the Moto3 grid.
The weather did not stop playing its jokes in France and even made an appearance during Qualifying. The fifth round of 2017 was greeted with a drizzle, dampening the plans of the riders and teams right at the top of the session.
In the morning, the protagonists of the Moto3 class started the day with low temperatures (9°C air, 12°C asphalt) on a still very moist track due to overnight rain. With conditions somewhere between wet and dry, the Leopard Racing Team decided to head out on track only in the last few minutes of FP3 (finished with Joan Mir and Livio Loi in 13th and 28th position respectively after only four laps) to avoid taking risks and wait for more favourable conditions in the afternoon.
At 12:35 Local Time, the duo of the Leopard Racing Team immediately put their two NSF 250RWs on track to take full advantage of all 40 minutes of qualifying. Joan Mir rushed to the top of the provisional times, followed by Livio Loi who was only a few tenths off the Top Ten. Unfortunately, in the decisive moments in the battle for pole position, rain saw the cards shuffled across the table and upset the plans of many. This prohibited the two teammates from showing their full potential and improving their grid positions.
The protagonists of the Moto3 class will return tomorrow morning at 8:40 am for 20 minutes of Warm Up, anticipating the 2017 season’s fifth race, which will kick off at 11:00 local time.
#36 Joan MIR – 8th (1’43.057):
“I’m happy with the day, although things in the qualification did not go as we hoped. We went strong in the first run, I was well within the times to stay at the front. But at the most important moment, rain came. However, I have a margin, we have to remain calm and concentrate for the race tomorrow.”
#11 Livio LOI – 13th (1’43.391):
“I am happy enough for how it all went, but only in the final: in the first two runs I had problems and came back to the box first because I knew I had to change something. In the last exit we improved the feeling, but I still did not feel comfortable. Because of this I think all in all we did a good time. Now we will analyze the data with the boys, we are going to make a nice race.”
