moto3 / Mir fast on Friday in Texas

On the 5.5 km of CoTA, the Moto3 championship leader closes in on the top of the time sheets at the third round of the 2017 Championship. Some difficulties for his teammate, Belgian Livio Loi today.

The MotoGP World Championships remains on the American continent, moving from Argentina to the United States: to the Circuit of the Americas (CoTA) in Austin, Texas, host to the third round of 2017. After learning a step or two of the Broken Spoken Swing, Joan Mir made a good debut today on a track he does not rate as one of his favourites.

Under the cloudy morning sky (22°C air/25°C asphalt) Mallorca’s talent faced FP1 in his own way, attacking the curves and curbs of the CoTA and placing himself in fourth position behind Canet (the only rider to break the 2’17 barrier ) and the Italians Bastianini and Fenati. Good performance also for Livio Loi, eleventh (like his race number) at the end of the FP1 with a best time of 2’19.470 recorded at the last of his 14 laps.

In the afternoon the temperatures rose slightly, with Canet continuing strong ride. Joan Mir did not lower his guard, pushing his NSF250RW to the limit and progressively lowering his times by more than one second to close with a 2’17.486, only + 0.736s from the top. There were some more difficulties for Livio Loi his teammate. In the FP2, the Belgian made a change that did not prove to be successful, but managed to improve in the last few minutes by 2 tenths, and found the right direction for his setup.

Behind Leopard Racing Team’s Joan Mir were the Hondas of Fenati and Martin. Tomorrow, on Saturday, April 22, the protagonists of the Moto3 class will be engaged in the third and last round of the Free Practice, anticipating the official qualifying show of the 12:35 local time.

#36 Joan MIR – 2nd (2’17.486):
“I am happy for today, because we have improved much from FP1 to FP2. We’ve worked on some aspects of the bike that did not convince me at first, ending the day with a strong pace. We got closer, even though we’re still far away. Tomorrow we will try to continue in this direction, to be able to do even better.”

#11 Livio LOI – 23rd (2’19.211):
“The first session today did not go bad, always running with the same tyres. We had some problems with the corner entry and the grip at the back, although the pace was good. We tried to make a change for the FP2, but it did not yield the expected results. So we went back to the FP1 setup and in fact I was back to being fast, but in those last laps I found myself in the traffic.”
