moto3 / Mir immediately fast, Polanco learning quickly at Aragon
The leader of the Moto3 class impressed on his favourite circuit, leading in FP2 and ending the day just 0.009s shy of the overall fastest time. Aaron Polanco meanwhile debuted well, as he continued to grow with both the bike and team.
It was a day of practice at MotorLand Aragon, scene of the 14th round of the 2017 season. The morning began with quite low temperatures (18°C air / 19°C ground) to welcome the protagonists of the Moto3 class. In the Leopard Racing Team box, a new member was noticed: with the number 37 on the bike, Aaron Polanco joined Joan Mir, replacing the unlucky Livio Loi.
The 17-year-old began climbing the timing tower immediately, deeply engaged in understanding the bike and progressively improving in FP1. The leader of the Moto3 class has been steadily running at a very low pace, coming under the two minutes wall and closing the first session in 2nd position, just 0.009s from the top position.
Late in the morning a slight rain shower came to the 5.1 km of the MotorLand, delivering a damp track for FP2 to the two Leopard Racing Team riders. Aaron Polanco made 11 laps as he continued to improve the feeling on his Honda NSF250RW, taking more risks in the tricky conditions as his feeling improved. Joan Mir waited for the last 10 minutes of the session to put wheels on track and make his name noticed once again on screen, the result of a steady pace and the highest top0speed (235.6 km/h) saw him take over at the top.
Tomorrow, before getting on track in the FP3 session, Joan Mir will unveil the livery of his special helmet dedicated to the MotorLand Aragon circuit and all his fans!
#36 Joan MIR – 2nd (1’59.123)
“I am very happy for this first day, although it was quite strange because of the weather and the track. In the second session we tried a solution to gain more grip but did not yield the expected results. Surely we will try some other changes for tomorrow with qualifying.”
#37 Aaron POLANCO – 27th (2’01.537)
“It was a busy day. I’m learning the bike on it, because it’s quite different from what I usually ride. I could have done a bit of a better time, but I was almost always alone on track and didn’t have anyone as a reference. In FP2 I pushed more but I could not complete an ideal lap.”
