moto3 / Mir on second row at MotorLand as feeling grows for Polanco
The talent of Mallorca, with a good pace at his home circuit, will contest tomorrow from sixth place; his teammate for the weekend, rookie Aaron Polanco, improves his time, highlighting a growing feeling with his NSF250RW.
Saturday morning at MotorLand Aragon began with a great surprise from Joan Mir for all his fans at his home Grand Prix: a special edition helmet by Starline Designers in collaboration with AGV Helmets (Click Here to see!). The cold temperatures (air 15°C / 17°C ground) limited the performance of the riders in the first laps, but the arrival of the sun meant that the times were quicker as the session approached its end.
The rookie Aaron Polanco was among the first riders to exit pit-lane and immediately attacked the 5.1km of the MotorLand circuit, the 14th round of the 2017 season. The 17-year-old Almussafes was often close to the Top10, showing his potential. After getting up to speed, his team-mate Joan Mir began to attack the curbs of his favourite circuit, one of the first to post serious improvements and ending FP3 exactly where he needed to be.
The interest of all the fans, and riders, was peaked at 12:35 local time as Qualifying began in Aragon. Now with ideal climatic conditions, the Leopard Racing Team was focused on giving their most out on track. Joan Mir, the leader of the championship standings, spent most of his first run alone – looking to improve himself. Aaron Polanco, showed great improvement, and, apart from the first sector, posted his best times. It was all to play for in the final moments of Qualifying for the lightweight class but it was a risk. As Mir pushed for the pole position, he was forced to change his trajectory to at Turn 15 to avoid other riders falling in front of him. Unharmed, tomorrow the Majorcan will jump from the second row and try to reward the Leopard Racing Team and all his fans at MotorLand Aragon.
The protagonists of the Moto3 class will return tomorrow morning at 8:40 am for 20 minutes of Warm Up, anticipating the 2017 season’s fourteenth race, which will kick off at 11:00 local time.
#36 Joan MIR – 6th (1’58.784)
“In the first two Qualifying runs I felt at ease, I came out alone trying to find my rhythm, even though on this track the slip stream counts for a lot. In the last lap I cam upon a crash and I could not avoid falling myself. After all, the second row is fine, tomorrow I will try to make my own race!”
#37 Aaron POLANCO – 27th (1’59.833)
“In the FP3 this morning I improved my time compared to yesterday and in general I felt more comfortable on the bike. In the same way, I went on to qualify, putting it all in the last lap: it was a pity to have lost so much in the first sector, because in the other three I scored my best partial times. I know I can go faster, tomorrow I will try to reposition and stay with the guys in front.”
