moto3 / Mir set to open fourth row at Cheste
A defective tyre deprived the Palma de Mallorca rookie of the first row at the Gran Premio de la Comunitat Valenciana. Quartararo and Locatelli found little feeling in the decisive qualifying session, after their excellent performance in FP3 in the morning.
It promises to be a great battle tomorrow for the Leopard Racing Team at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, the three riders pledged to recover and get a good result after a difficult round of qualifications, which reversed the excellent results recorded in the last practice session.
The best of the “triple force”, led by Christian Lundberg and Miodrag Kotur, was the ‘master of the house’ Joan Mir. The Palma de Mallorca rookie has long cherished the idea of being able to score his second pole position of the season; unfortunately, one defective tyre mounted precisely in his last outing prevented the Spaniard from finding a better position on the grid: 10th overall will see him aim to make yet another comeback if he wants to win the title of Rookie of the Year against Italians Bulega and Di Giannantonio.
Fabio Quartararo and Andrea Locatelli have paid for a lack of feeling with their KTM, among other things, after recording brilliant results in FP3 in the morning. The Nice talent in fact had closed the last free practice this Saturday in fourth overall session; but in the afternoon the situation was reversed and the Frenchman had to settle for 23rd place, with 27 riders within 1 second.
His teammate Andrea Locatelli is the last to be within this margin, which highlights once again the high level of competitiveness of the Moto3 class. The 20 year old had looked strong after recording his name on the top of the time sheets of FP3. In the afternoon Loka was plagued by front problems that ended with a crash (without consequences) at Turn 4.
Tomorrow at 8:40 Warm Up will begin :a preview of the eighteenth and final race of the 2016 season which will start at 11:00 o’clock.
#36 Joan MIR – 10th (1’39.577):
“Too bad for the final exit of qualifying: we had a problem with the front tyre that we have used. A shame because we were running alone, without a slipstream, and getting a good time. The positive thing is that we have a good pace: we’ll see what happens in the race tomorrow.”
#20 Fabio QUARTARARO – 23rd (1’39.927):
“It has been a very difficult day because we had no feeling, or rather a lot of different feelings between the morning and afternoon, which did not allow me to push as I wanted.”
#55 Andrea LOCATELLI – 27th (1’40.261):
“Unfortunately I crashed at the end and I could not push as hard as I was suffering on the front. I tried to push lap after lap throughout the session but I was really struggling. In FP3 the bike was very stable, while in the afternoon the front kept closing and eventually failed to avoid the drop.”
