moto3 / Mir signs off Friday in Austria

The leader of the Moto3 class set the pace on the first day at the Red Bull Ring, sitting on top of the standings after Free Practice. A discreet performance also for Belgian Livio Loi, comfortable on the Honda NSF250RW with Leopard Racing.

Just five days after Joan Mir’s tremendous triumph in the Czech Republic, the Leopard Racing team today put their wheels back on track at the Red Bull Ring, the Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich, the eleventh round of the 2017 calendar. Friday morning started with low temperatures (18°C air / 20°C ground) and with a constant threat of rain floating overhead for both sessions.

The leader of the Moto3 class started the Austria weekend in brilliant form and with high morale. It could not be any different after his sixth win of the season and he now returns to the circuit where he first won a year ago. Mallorca’s talent has made another step, constantly running towards the top of the time sheets. In FP1 he was the first rider to drop under the 1’38 wall and also recorded the highest top speed of 217.2 km/h. His team-mate, Livio Loi, also appeared comfortable on his Honda NSF250RW: the Belgian often appearing in the top five during FP1, closing with a discreet 11th place.

Unfortunately, the weather continued to adversely affect the second part of the day, with the rain coming up twice: between the first and second sessions, and then during the concluding and decisive moment of FP2. No riders were able to improve their times, but the Leopard Racing Team can look forward to improvements from both Joan Mir and Livio Loi, ready to give their best in tomorrow’s official qualifying.

#36 Joan MIR – 1st (1’37.549)
“I’m very happy, it was a positive day. This morning I found myself at ease with the bike, while in FP2 the weather affected the plans. But we are confident because we have a good setting for the race already. We are ready to do well even tomorrow.”

#11 Livio LOI – 11th (1’38.503)
“In the dry we did very well, keeping a good pace alone and without any slipstream. There are still some details to improve for tomorrow. We are quite in place, compared to other riders who have mounted new rubber. Unfortunately at the end of FP2 the rain came and did not allow us to lower our time.”
