moto3 / Quartararo on the third row in MotorLand
The talented youngster from Nice steals a place on the third row right at the end of Qualifying in Aragon. Locatelli and Mir will start respectively in 16th & 27th on the grid.
It promises to be a great battle tomorrow for the Leopard Racing team, with its three riders pledging themselves to recover and get a good result after a difficult round of qualifying practice at the Gran Premio Movistar de Aragon.
The best of the “triple force” led by Christian Lundberg and Miodrag Kotur, was Frenchman Fabio Quartararo. The 18 year-old of Nice, first overall in FP1, has been able to set a very competitive time in the final seconds of the session. The time was more impressive considering consider the lack of references and slipstream on his flying lap. A 1’58.929 will allow him to start from the third row of the grid tomorrow.
Even his teammate Andrea Locatelli was the protagonist in this decisive afternoon session at Aragon: 19 year-old of Selvino, has shown some interesting partial times in the first three sectors of the track; a slowdown in his ideal lap saw him lose time, which later translated to 16th on the grid.
With most of his fever gone, Joan Mir put his wheels on the track this morning for the first time over the weekend, having missed yesterday with illness. Eleventh overall in FP3, Qualifying probed more difficult and he was unable to advance past 27th spot. The rookie of Palma de Mallorca is accustomed to big comebacks, tomorrow he will have to let everyone see the special feeling he has with the 5.1 km of Aragon.
Tomorrow at 8:40 Warm Up will begin: a preview of the fourteenth race of the 2016 season that will start at 11:00 o’clock.
#20 Fabio QUARTARARO – 8th (1’58.929):
“It was quite a good qualifying for me: at first I did not have much feeling with the S, then with the new tyre I was strong and I kept a very steady pace. My fastest lap came alone, without exploiting the slipstream of others. All this gives me hope for tomorrow’s race.”
#55 Andrea LOCATELLI – 16th (1’59.152):
“I worked the session right till the end. I tried to take my own pace and not play in traffic. I tried to run on my own, with a few references, and the M in the rear allowed us to do 59s and I can push. I have to improve in Sector 4. Too bad for the last lap, in which I found myself overtaking and I lost precious tenths that would have allowed me to go ahead tomorrow. I am sure that tomorrow we can have a good race.”
#36 Joan MIR – 27th (1’59.795):
“I’m not at 100% fitness. This morning we did a good job and I adjusted well to the circumstances, finishing in 11th place. Qualifying did not go well: I could not complete a lap as I wanted, taking the checkered flag at the end. Tomorrow I must first try to recover my fitness for this circuit that I really like.”
