moto3 / Second row for Mir in Qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The leader of the Moto3 class will start from fifth on the starting grid at his home race. His teammate, Livio Loi, will be searching for points the eighth row.
The morning started with the sun high in the sky and optimum conditions (25°C air / 30°C asphalt) for the protagonists of the Moto3 class. In these ideal conditions, riders quickly got to work. As soon as the pit-lane was opened, the track was flooded with Moto3 machines, with both Leopard Racing drivers coming to the fore. World championship leader Joan Mir was top of the provisional classification and closed the session in third overall position. His team-mate Livio Loi, spent much of the session towards the top of the pile, before ending in 17th place with a good pace.
Qualifying was tricky in the afternoon due to the heavy traffic on the track as many riders were sat waiting for a slipstream. Livio Loi was the one who made the most of the open gaps on track, but on the last lap was unable to exploit the potential of his Honda NSF 250 RW, losing several tenths in the second sector of the track. The talent of Palma de Mallorca Joan Mir continued in his indomitable style, unleashing a series of fast laps, always close to the top, and ending with a 1’54.036, which was good enough for the second row of the grid.
The protagonists of the Moto3 class will return tomorrow morning at 8:40 am for 20 minutes of Warm Up, anticipating the seventh race of 2017, which will kick off at 11:00 local time.
#36 Joan MIR – 5th (1’54.036):
“It was a positive day, especially for the rhythm. In fact I missed something in the last qualifying session, but in this category it is not so important to land on pole or fifth. I am confident for tomorrow’s race.”
#11 Livio LOI – 23rd (1’55.141):
“In the free practice we did well, unfortunately in Qualifying we did not manage to pull off a good lap. In the second sector I met traffic, losing more than half a second. The pace is good but I’m better off with the M tyre. Tomorrow I will have to start strong, especially in the first two laps, to recover so many positions.”
