moto3 / The Leopard Racing Team’s duo star in free practice in Malaysia

2017 World Champion Joan Mir and his team-mate Livio Loi started the weekend at the Sepang International Circuit well, highlighting a fast pace and good feelings on their respective Honda.

The first day of free practice at the Sepang International Circuit, scene of the penultimate round of the 2017 season saw the Leopard Racing duo return to the track for the first time since their wonderful 1-2 in Australian which saw crowned Joan Mir World Champion.

The Majorcan closed FP1 but what also impressed was the performance of his team-mate Livio Loi, who landed in Malaysia on the heels of his first Phillip Island podium, was temporarily ahead in the ranking. Both were among the first to fall under the 2’13” barrier, separated at the end of the session by just 0.3s.

In the late morning, the usual rain fell on the 5.5km of the Sepang International Circuit, delivering a damp track for FP2. On the wet asphalt, the World Champion Joan Mir emerged challenging for the top of the standings against local hero Adam Norrodin. Good feelings for the Belgian Livio Loi, third overall in today’s combined results, determined to continue in a positive manner and make the most of the last raecs.

The day, unfortunately, was marked by the sad news of the loss of our friend Stefan Kiefer, with whom we spent two seasons together. We are very saddened to hear of his loss: our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

#36 Joan MIR – 1st (2’13.129):
“I’m happy about how this first day went on. It was a positive Friday because I enjoyed riding a lot and got some good feelings. Too bad for the second session in the wet, where we tried a change that did not give its results, but now we already know how to behave in the event of rain.”

#11 Livio LOI – 3rd (2’13.437):
“It was a good day because in the FP1 we have always been one of the top riders and I kept a good pace. Only at the end of the session I stumbled into a small slip because I was pushing to the limit to improve my chrono. The feelings are good, but in the wet we can still improve, especially for the back. Tomorrow we’ll be looking for a solution and I will do my best.”
