tcr / Vernay keeps title bid alive despite fall

Unable to pick up points in either race, Vernay sees his advantage rapidly shrink at the top of the table.

It was a race full of drama for the Leopard Racing Team with Rob Huff and Jean-Karl Vernay crashing out at the infamous Turn 9. The pair came off the high speed corner, avoiding injury but walking away with little to show for their efforts as Dušan Borković took his second win.

The crash in Race 1 forced Vernay to miss the remainder of the event, allowing Comini to move to second in the championship. Comini sits just three points back on the Leopard Racing driver.

Colciago and Morbidelli formed an all-Italian front row for Race 2 at 14:35 Local Time. From pole, the Italian broke away quickly and secured his third win of the season. There was frantic fighting behind with a number or drivers swapping and changing positions as the race went on – including several more crashes. One notable faller was Dušan Borković, Race 1’s winner.

All this drama saw Vernay drop to third in the championship standings, 12 points now dividing the top three as they duke it out for the crown. Vernat won’t have to wait long to respond as the next round will take place in Budapest at the Hungaroring in just a week’s time.

#2 – Jean-Karl VERNAY:
“It was a really terrible day for us with two crashes. I’m really disappointed about our position in the championship, our challenge took a big hit. I also took a big hit and my ribs are hurting quite a lot so hopefully I will be ready for next weekend. I’m just focusing on me and getting ready for next week. A big sorry to the team. The same happened in practice with a big puncture, we couldn’t do anything – the tyre blew up. This is really dangerous and unsafe, you saw a lot of big crashes here.”

#3 – Rob HUFF:

“It was a really tough weekend, obviously. The biggest and most important part is that both of us are OK, We did everything correctly and simply got unlucky with the punctures. It was a massive crash for me, really big. The car rolled about six times and was fully destroyed. The team now have the big task of organizing two brand new cars for the next round in Budapest which is in just one week.”
