tcr / Vernay quickest on Friday free practice at Sakhir

The French driver of the Leopard Racing WRT team sets the fastest lap of the day following two Friday free practice sessions at the Bahrain International Circuit, the track hosting the second round of the 2017 TCR International Series as a support event to the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

The second round of the 2017 TCR International Series will take place this weekend at the Bahrain International Circuit, the famous racetrack designed by German architect Hermann Tilke which opened its doors in 2004 to host its first Formula 1 Grand Prix. Once again, this round will be a support event to the much-anticipated Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.

Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay of the Leopard Racing WRT team set the fastest lap of the morning session with his Volkswagen Golf GTi thanks to a brilliant 2’13”678 followed by James Nash and the two Alfa Romeo Giulietta cars of Dušan Borković and Davit Kajaia.

Stefano Comini’s Audi RS3 LMS set the fastest lap of the second session with 2’13”731 ahead of Pepe Oriola, James Nash and Roberto Colciago with Jean-Karl Vernay’s Leopard Racing WRT Volkswagen Golf GTi taking 5th in the session.

Tomorrow there will be a thirty-minute qualifying session with all drivers taking part in Q1 and the fastest twelve that will fight for the pole position in Q2. Race-1 will take place in the afternoon right before the F1 Qualifying. Race-2 will be held on Sunday, in the early afternoon, as a juicy appetizer to the Formula 1 race.

#2 Jean-Karl Vernay, 2’13”565:

“Last year I was really quick here, but the car wasn’t really ready to perform. The weekend is going to be tough, although I like this warm weather. We need to think about a lot of things; tyre degradation, we need to set up the car for the race and also set up the car for Qualifying. It’s just like when I arrived in Singapore last year – I didn’t know the track but I was quicker than the other guys. It’s the same here; I don’t think I’m over-driving but the lap time was really good. We need to score more points here than last year here, but my team is incredible and I’m really confident.”

“It doesn’t mean anything to be fastest in Free Practice, but this morning was good for my confidence. The track changed a lot between the two sessions – the rubber from F1, F2 and the Porsches meant a lot more grip. We knew it would change and we tried to change the setup but maybe we went a little the wrong way. It’s nothing huge, but we need to work to be ready for tomorrow.”
