tcr / Vernay secures third place in Race-1

Following a long battle culminated in a spectacular overtake on the penultimate lap, the Leopard Racing WRT’s driver bagged yet another podium finish behind Colciago and Valente. The Frenchman is now second in the standings, level on points with the Italian.

In qualifying, the DG Sport Competition Opel Astra cars scored a 1-2 with Mat’o Homola setting the fastest lap ahead of teammate Pierre-Yves Corthals, but the Slovak was demoted to the back of the grid for this afternoon’s Race 1 following an engine change. Corthals inherited pole position with Hugo Valente (Lukoil Craft-Bamboo SEAT León) second, Roberto Colciago (M1RA Honda Civic Type-R) third and Leopard Racing WRT’s Jean-Karl Vernay eventually fifth on the grid.

In Race-1, Colciago was the first to take the lead in group of four whereas Vernay engaged a wheel-to-wheel fight Borković and Nash. On the third lap, championship leader Kajaja was forced to retire because of a technical issue while he was in 4th place while the Leopard Racing WRT driver passed Nash to begin his chase of Giulietta that was 1″ ahead. The Frenchman pushed all the way to progressively reduce the gap from the Serbian rival. Just on the penultimate lap came Vernay’s masterpiece: while entering a corner, Borković’s car made contact with Corthals’ Astra allowing Vernay to shove his VW Golf GTI on the inside and take third place, which he was able to keep until the end. After a good start in Georgia, the French driver scored another podium finish for Leopard Racing WRT to reach 40 points and the lead of the championship together with Colciago. Race-2, starting with the reverse grid, will take place tomorrow…

Jean-Karl Vernay (3rd):
“My start was just terrible, so I need to work on my coordination because I’ve been struggling with that for a few months now. I was lucky not to spin on the first lap, but after that I tried to be a little bit calm. We had a small engine problem, as sometimes there was no power when I was back on the throttle. I lost a lot of time behind Borković because he did a good race and was quite fast on the straights so the only way to overtake him was to wait for a mistake and in the end it happened. I think we deserved the result – my team did a great job and the car was really, really quick so let’s see how we do tomorrow.”
