moto3 / Wet weather hits Le Mans
The leader of the Moto3 championship, Joan Mir, ended Friday free practice with a good feeling on wet asphalt. Redemption once again the goal from his team-mate Livio Loi, crashing without consequences.
On Friday morning at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit, practice began but with very low temperatures (9°C air, 11°C asphalt) after heavy rain poured down yesterday and last night. The protagonists of the Moto3 class and the Leopard Racing Team duo came with confidence on the wet track in FP1. Fortunately the new asphalt kept the good grip of old, allowing riders to constantly improve their times on rain tyres. Joan Mir finished the first session in 11th position with his team-mate Livio Loi, 24th.
A violent downpour hit the track in the afternoon, just before the start of FP2. Yet the Leopard Racing Team left pit-lane with determination to show their potential. In particular, Joan Mir made himself a key protagonist by staying towards the top of the time sheets, temporarily occupying first position on the timing screens. Meanwhile Livio Loi, was on a fast lap but a highside at Turn 12 ended his chances of ending the session on top.
No physical consequence for the Belgian, who tomorrow will have his revenge and will be able to gain some important positions on the grid. Spaniard Joan Mir, is looking and feeling confident for the race, which he hopes will be dry. Tomorrow, Saturday 20 May, the protagonists of the Moto3 class will head out for their third and final round of Free Practice, just before the official qualifying show later in the day.
#36 Joan MIR – 11th (1’51.959):
“I’m happy with the day, although the result is not great but I’m happy for the good feelings. We were in the lead for most of the second session, at the end we installed a rain tyre with which I had little grip. I needed a few laps to bring it to the right temperature. Tomorrow I hope it’s dry, as the race will certainly run on Sunday: we will have to work hard!”
#11 Livio LOI – 24th (1’53.217):
“It was not an easy day for me. In these conditions I didn’t go well, I missed a bit of feeling with the front and in the second session it rained even more. In the lap I fell I was stepping forward, I felt more comfortable, after that high-side my session was over, while everyone (like me) was improving. Tomorrow on dry will be another story!”
